January is certainly the time to think ahead for the rest of the year and all of us are full of good intentions; exercise more, eat healthier, learn a new foreign language. Yet by February over 80% of resolutions fall by the wayside.
What if one of your New Year’s Resolutions is to progress further in your career? IASeminars have come up with some great tips to help ensure you keep your resolutions on track and by the end of the year you can be confident you’ve reached new heights!
1. Set realistic goals
Let’s say you want a promotion but you know you’re lacking in a certain skill set. Why not sit down and set yourself a realistic goal about how you’re going to achieve that. Be it using in-house support or attending a course which will increase your knowledge set.
2. Work out your game plan
Planning is vital to progress further in your career. Write up a list of what you require to move onto the next step and note also any obstacles that may get in your way. By being aware of the challenges you face you’re less likely to fail and will be able to stick on the path you’ve set yourself.
3. Supportive team environment
The support of a good team and management will help to ensure you stick to your goals. Tell your manager what you want to achieve, they will no doubt want to support your career goals and can work with you to ensure you keep to your game plan and provide training where it is required. Learn from colleagues and the challenges they may have faced to get where you want to be.
4. Stay motivated
By mid-February, it can seem tough to keep things going and it’s easy to get caught up in the everyday of work. Keep that game plan in mind and remind yourself why you’ve set the goals in the first place. Create milestones that you can tick off to remind yourself how far you’ve come throughout the year.
5. Set yourself a reward scheme
There are going to be challenges on the way to your final goal and be aware there will be hard days. However, having something to look forward to at the end of it can make all the difference. Why not give yourself a small reward at the end of each milestone? It could be as simple as a muffin from your local cakeshop. And keep bearing in mind that the reward at the end of all of this is constant career progression, which often gives financial rewards!
